7 EXPERT TIPS FOR BUILDING MUSCLE AT THE GYM-by Coach James

Then here is what I’ve learned and applied over 20 years of training at the gym:

1-Learn the basics of technique- I’ve put this number 1 for a reason.

It’s honestly that important.

The quality of each individual rep will determine your ability to build muscle.

Our coaches are always on the lookout for proper technique.

No jerky movements
No bouncy fast movements
No using momentum.

Controlled moments will always build more muscle.

2-Learn to lift with control-Simply lifting from point A to B without controlling the 4 parts of a movement will only build your ego not your muscle.

Bouncy jerky movements do not build muscle.

Learn to control the movement from start to finish.

3-Focus on quality not quantity- I learned this one the hard way.

I thought more exercises and reps=more muscle.

We do need some volume but not as much as you think.

Focus more on the quality of your reps and you’ll build more muscle.

4-Focus on intensity not duration-Another one I learned the hard way.

If you are training longer than 1 hour and 30 minutes it’s more than likely you’ve got too many exercises and too many wasted reps.

At Elite we train our clients for 50 minutes max.

The benefits: less joint soreness, faster recovery and more muscle growth.

5-learn to sensibly overload- I say sensibly because in my experience most men try to lift too heavy to the detriment of technique.

This will eventually lead to injury, joint soreness and less muscle building.

Go up in small increments.

6-Get a program designed by an expert.

Random workouts produce random results.

If you are going in the gym and making it up as you go along you have no chance of building muscle.

7-learn to be consistent-It doesn’t matter how good your program is if you are not consistent in getting to the gym.

Remember muscles need stimulated on a regular basis to grow.
